Making A Splash
North Saanich, B.C.
Deep Cove Elementary School
A challenging overhead and linking combo for an intermediate age level was on the must-have list for the Playground Committee on this project at Deep Cove Elementary School in North Saanich. Parents, teachers and students all came together to determine the best components, making this structure uniquely customized. A custom word search created by students was made into a play panel; a student drawing competition chose links such as the Sky Bridge and the Impact Catwalk with Pirates’ Plank below. A social gathering space in the Wee Table with Seats allows kids to sit, chat and socialize. An accessible poured-in-place rubber pathway leads to the wheelchair ramp to save space. The ever-popular Ninja Wall acts as a focal point for a quick entrance up to the impressive 88” deck. No route is the same; whether users are heading up the Wiggle Link, down the Kiddie Climb or through the Aluminum Crawl Tube this circuit structure encourages social and cooperative play. A variation of overheads allows kids a change in movements and style of play. A beautiful colour palette of blues and silver reflects the proximity to the ocean. Overall, an awe-worthy structure that is impressive to passerbys and packed with play value for users of all ages.
