Rotary Peace Park
This destination playground in Whitehorse was carefully crafted to reflect Yukon identity. From the sternwheeler to the dog sled, this culturally-themed design for Rotary Peace Park creates play experiences for all ages and abilities.
This large-scale playground in Whitehorse warranted special attention due to the scale and prominent location of Rotary Peace Park. The park is one of the city’s premier recreational locations. Having made many trips to Whitehorse in recent years, we were very familiar with the park’s unique qualities. Our goal was to incorporate elements showcasing the City’s & Yukon’s identity into the proposed playground design.
Two features of note are the custom sternwheeler design we dreamed up for the junior play structure (a nod to the historic S.S. Klondike located nearby) and the wheelchair-accessible Bouncing Dogsled that we incorporated into the senior play structure. Accessibility and inclusivity for children of all ages and all abilities were of key importance to our customer. A fully-ramped structure provides platform-level play to children with mobility challenges. Understanding the importance of swinging, two accessible swing seats were added to complement the existing swings at the site. In addition, the customer chose accessible, pour-in-place rubber surfacing for a portion of the site to ensure easy access to ground-level play features as well as the accessible junior play structure. A large upper body circuit and enormous net provide loads of hanging and climbing activities.
Kids will be flocking to explore this vibrant, action-packed playground in Whitehorse!
