Whitehorse's Rotary Peace Park

Play & Culture Meet

From the sternwheeler to the dog sled, our design for Rotary Peace Park in Whitehorse was carefully crafted to reflect the heritage and culture of its location while creating play experiences for all ages and abilities.

This large-scale project warranted special attention due to the scale and prominent location of Rotary Peace Park as one of the premier recreational locations in Whitehorse. Having made many trips to Whitehorse in recent years, we were very familiar with the park and its unique characteristics and eager to incorporate elements showcasing the City’s & Yukon’s identity into the proposed playground design. Two features of note are the custom sternwheeler design we dreamed up for the junior play structure (a nod to the historic S.S. Klondike located nearby) and the wheelchair-accessible Bouncing Dogsled  that we incorporated into the senior play structure.

Accessibility and inclusivity for children of all ages and all abilities of key importance to our customer. A fully-ramped structure provides platform-level play to children with mobility challenges. Understanding the importance of swinging for all children, two accessible swing seats were added to complement the existing swings at the site. In addition, the customer chose accessible, pour-in-place rubber surfacing for a portion of the site to ensure easy access to ground-level play features as well as the accessible junior play structure. A large upper body circuit and enormous net provide loads of hanging and climbing activities while the bright colour scheme entices children to play!
